Discover how one filmmaker turned failure into fuel, found purpose through storytelling, and self-belief.
Introduction: Growth Behind the Scenes
“Entrepreneurship can change your life—but self-growth shapes who you become while building it.”
For Aaron J. Nelson, the journey has been about more than just creating films. It’s been about resilience, healing, and becoming better through every loss and lesson learned.
“While entrepreneurship has positively impacted my family, filmmaking has transformed something deeper—my mindset, discipline, and sense of purpose.”
Lessons Learned Through Failure
Every loss and failure became a lesson—one that, in hindsight, was necessary. These moments forced growth, sharpened perspective, and ultimately led to better decisions and a stronger path forward.
“Success didn’t come easy. In fact, it was built on setbacks. Instead of quitting, the choice was made to evolve and move differently.”
Choosing Growth: The Decision to Return to School
One of the most pivotal decisions in Aaron’s journey was returning to graduate school at Savannah College of Art and Design.
“Trying to build a filmmaking career independently in South Carolina came with challenges—limited support, lack of resources, and stalled momentum. Recognizing the need for more, the decision to return to school became a turning point.”
At SCAD, everything shifted:
• Access to stronger creative networks
• A supportive environment
• Opportunities to grow as both a filmmaker and actor
“Sometimes, success requires stepping back to reposition for something greater.”
The Power of Environment: Letting Go of What Doesn’t Serve You
Not every connection is meant to support your growth.
One of the hardest lessons learned was realizing that:
• The wrong circle can limit your progress
• Not everyone will support your vision—even collaborators
“This lack of support led to isolation and a temporary break. But it also created space for something better.”
“Now, being surrounded by a supportive cohort has made all the difference—proving that the right environment can accelerate your growth and confidence.”
Mental Health & Creativity: Tools for Well-Being
Sustaining creativity requires taking care of yourself.
Three core practices have been essential:
1. Therapy
Nearly a decade of therapy has provided healing, accountability, and professional guidance. Growth requires honesty—and doing the work.
2. Journaling
Writing things down creates clarity. It allows reflection on what went right, what didn’t, and how to improve moving forward.
3. Music
Music serves as freedom and emotional expression—a daily soundtrack that brings comfort, inspiration, and release.
A Defining Moment: Stepping Into Direction
There’s a moment when everything shifts—when you finally feel aligned.
For Aaron, that moment was directing their first professional short film, Nice Guy.
After not completing a project since 2021, stepping back into the director’s role was more than an achievement—it was a breakthrough. Collaborating with talented actors and a dedicated crew reignited passion and confidence.
And the journey doesn’t stop there.
Next up: a web series titled GIRL!-Friend Therapy, set to be directed in the summer—another step toward purpose and creative fulfillment.

Understanding Your “Why”
Not every “why” has to be external.
In this case, the driving force is simple:
Belief in self.
“The ideas, the vision, the creativity—they deserve to exist. That inner conviction fuels consistency, ambition, and execution.”
Sometimes, your purpose starts with trusting that your gifts are not accidental.
Building a Brand With Meaning: Mors Calumnia Productions
At just 17 years old, a name was discovered that would become a lifelong brand: Mors Calumnia Productions.
Meaning “death to oppression” in Latin, the name represents:
Overcoming struggle
Resisting limitations
Pushing through barriers—especially as a Black creative
“This brand is more than a label—it’s a statement. A reflection of identity, experience, and mission.”
The brand isn’t separate from the creator—it is the creator.
Final Thoughts: Turning Vision Into Reality
This journey is a reminder that:
Failure is part of growth
Environment matters
Healing fuels creativity
Purpose requires action
From setbacks to storytelling, this filmmaker is building more than projects—they’re building a legacy rooted in resilience, authenticity, and vision.
And one thing is certain:
The story is just getting started.
